“Utile Dulcie” – Work Hard, Play Hard – Two words which couldn’t have been more appropriate for how the next 4 years were to unfold.
Harper Adams exceeded every expectation I had about attending university. A life changing experience, so SO much fun, and an education which would provide me with an excellent foundation for building a successful career. Harper Adams is a rural institution through and through. If the smell of the on-site working farm doesn’t make you feel at home, then students traversing the campus in muddy wellies and overalls certainly will. This is essential attire for a Harper student.
The Education
Tip top, there’s no slacking here when it comes to the hours of tuition delivered each week. Tuition is full on and full-time. A combination of farm walks, field trips, class room learning and practical industry experience (for those on a course which comprises a placement year), ensures students gain a premium education, with a holistic view on the industries they may find themselves working in post university.
The Social Life

Students certainly live by the university motto ‘work hard, play hard’. From sports, fixtures and society events, to bi-weekly parties (which almost always comprise of some sort of fancy dress) it is impossible to run out of things to do. In fact, like most, you will struggle to keep up with the amount of social events the university has to offer. It’s very hard to précis just how fantastic the social life is at Harper!
The Opportunity

Surely the most important thing right? Well if it is opportunity you are after Harper oozes it! The organisation it very well recognised for the high calibre of Graduates that it produces. This alone ensures that graduates are well received in the job market place upon leaving university. In addition, whilst studying, there are various awards, scholarships and competitions presented to students. More recently, students have featured on TV programmes such as First Time Farmers and Countryfile. Opportunity really is plentiful if you are prepared to grasp it!
On starting university, the best piece of advice a 4th year student gave me was “make sure you get involved and grasp every opportunity that is presented to you”. I’d pass this one piece of advice on to any future Harper student. Harper Adams is an incredibly special and unique institution.
