Why Buy A Connemara?

Why buy a connemara pony

Call me controversial but I, along with many friends who have years of ‘horsing around‘ under our belt, all agree with one thing, we’d buy our children Connemara ponies! Here are the reasons why:

1. They are versatile

Children change their mind daily. Fact. From showing queen one day to aspiring showjumper of the year the next. It’s for this reason that children’s ponies need to be versatile to accommodate their riders needs. They need to jump. They need to go well on the flat. They need to be strong. A Connemara ticks all of these boxes.

2. They are the master of all trades

I admit I was sceptical. Connemaras are often perceived as the ‘safe‘ version, the ‘jack of all trades‘. As a child I wanted a speed king, a jumping machine. Not a plod (another perception I had of the Connemara). Well if only I knew then what I know now. Connemaras can lend their hooves to anything. Ranging from super competitive show jumping ponies, to eventers and hugely sought after show ponies.

3. They Sell

Adults ride them, children ride them. The market for Connemaras is big! You’ll have no problem selling them.

4. They are safe

These ponies are safe, the most important factor to consider when buying a child’s pony. Their soft, quiet, and caring nature ensures they reflect the ability of their rider. They can be tuned up or down dependant on who they have on their back. They can go from Ferrari to Fiesta in a matter of minutes.

5. They are cheap to keep

Another huge benefit is financial. These ponies are very cheap to keep. They go with or without shoes, can live in or outdoors and are very ‘good doers’.  Your bank balance will be looking considerably healthier!

6. You’re guaranteed to fall in love with them

Come on… everyone know’s it, they are endearing and often super cute. You couldn’t get a more perfect child’s pony and with their kind nature they are guaranteed to put a smile on your child’s face.

Adults love Connemara’s too. I had my Connemara for 21 years, I learned to ride as an adult with him. I only wanted a hack but did ridden showing, cross country and dressage (to Elementary level). He was an English Connemara from Irish stock. I paid £500.00 for him in 1988, the best five hundred pounds worth ever. He died aged 24 years. We brought him over from England when we retired in Ireland.
