5 Essentials For A Farmhouse Kitchen

July 25, 2014

A farmhouse kitchen is at the heart of every country home.  For those in need of some inspiration, I thought I’d share some of my essentials that define the perfect country kitchen.

1. Find somewhere to put muddy boots

Living in the country, there is no escaping the mud!  An area dedicated to storing muddy boots is therefore essential.   I like this handy little boot holder from  Williams Sonoma.  If not, collect some materials and have a go at making one yourself!

2. An Aga

You will often find that an Aga is at the heart of any country kitchen.  With a range of uses from drying clothes to keeping sick animals warm, an Aga is more than just a cooker.

3. A drying rack

Living in the countryside a washing machine never stops.  To keep up with the drying this internal drying rack is perfect for drying wet clothing.  This classic rack with a pulley system from Daisy Hardcastle is a definite favourite of mine.

4. Animals

A farmhouse kitchen is the hub of family life, including a space for the animals.   Splash a hint of country life around the kitchen and bring the outdoors in! Choose some farm animals (I like ducks), get a stencil and give some painting a go!

5. Country Colour Schemes

Any colour which resonates with the country goes well in my opinion. I really don’t think you can go wrong here. However, at the moment pastel greens, blues and yellow are particularly popular. For me nothing beats Duck Egg blue.
