Meeting Mary King
A couple of months back, I had the pleasure of meeting Mary King. She really is one of my biggest inspirations and even though show jumping is my ‘thing’, Mary’s attitude towards her sport (eventing) is hugely motivational to any young rider aspiring to get to the top of their game.
So much can be taken from Mary, a lady who has remained at the top of British Eventing for 20 years, collecting three olympic medals along the way as well as being mum to a rising star, Emily King. Mary is a very grounded woman whose determination and patience has payed off.
Hugley respected, much can be learnt from Mary and I couldn’t resist asking her a couple of questions. When asked ” What tips would you give to a young eventer?” Mary replied:
” Follow your dreams and keep your lower leg forward”.
Mary King’s new book ‘My Way’
Unlike books Mary has previously written, this is her first educational book aimed at providing practical training advice for grass roots and amateur riders starting out in eventing. The book is split into four sections, the first section focusing on management of horses, and the following three broken down into training for the three disciplines; dressage, show jumping and cross country. The book filled to the brim with Mary’s training secrets.
I’ve read it cover to cover and this has to be my favourite training book of all time.
The book can be bought here through Mary’s blog.
